Flag Raising
Although many villagers fly flags on their own poles for various occasions, a flag will always be raised on the flagpole on the village green for all important occasions and memorials. The village appoints a Flag Master/Mistress who takes care of the flag raising and lowering. Sometimes this is accompanied by a religious service or other commemorative activities. Some of those occasions are shown below.

Lowering the flag at 11am
At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we will remember them.
Armistice is Latin for to stand (still) arms. The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11th November 1918. To this day, we mark Armistice Day with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, with villagers gathering on the green, around the flagpole. In 2021 we marked 100 years since the nation’s collective Remembrance traditions were first brought together, with a special poppy tribute on the green.
VE Day 8th May 2020
The commemoration of 75th anniversary of VE Day. Because of the Pandemic, the VE Day Commemoration event was relatively brief with the ‘Raising of the Flag’ and playing of the ‘Last Post’ before only a modest attendance.
The requirement for ‘social distancing’ in force at the time was respected by residents. We are grateful for the photos provided by Kelvin Schaefli.”
VJ Day 15th August 2020
2020 was the 75th anniversary of Victory in Japan (VJ) day. Villagers gathered on the Green to listen to an address by Admiral Sir Ian Forbes. You can read the address here.
