What’s On

The Historical Society and Heritage Centre work closely together to provide events relating to the history of the village and the surrounding area. All talks will be held in the Rowlands Castle Parish Hall at 7.30 pm. Entrance is free for members of the Historical Society and £5 for non-members. Membership of the Historical Society is £20. Historical Society AGM and talk: “Farming Through the Ages”


24th October Afternoon
Guided tour of Butser Ancient Farm.

An expert team member will give an overview of the five main time periods covered at Butser: Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon, spanning 5000 years and about the research and practical experiments carried out by the Farm’s researchers. “Rowlands Castle and the Jet Age”
Amongst other aircraft related stories, Rod Duggua will be delving into the mysterious crash of a state of the art jet on Rowlands Castle’s Golf Course in 1950.


21st January 2025
“Harlots, Dung & Glory – Part 1, 1100 – 1800”
Expect an entertaining talk from Andrew Negus who plots the rise of Portsmouth from a small hamlet surrounding the Camber, to a naval town which hosted the early voyages to America and the “First Fleet” to Australia, all this is interwoven with colourful depictions of the local population of the period.

“The Kenwood Company of Havant”
John Wood describes the life of his entrepreneur step-father who started his first company at 21 and later went on to found the Kenwood company which became the biggest employer in Havant making the iconic Kenwood Chef food mixer.

“Lepers on the Hill”
Archaeologist, Lesley Johnson describes how the story of Winchester’s leper hospital was uncovered and how leprosy and those suffering from it were viewed and treated in medieval Britain.


15th April 2025
“The History of Local Agriculture”
Ex Historical Society Chairman, Tim Cowin reveals how farms and farming practices in the local area have changed historically and how they have been affected by national and world events.
